A Father’s Day Letter to the NICU Dad

Dear NICU Dad,

I know you did not imagine spending your first Father’s Day—or any Father’s Day, for that matter, in the NICU. You likely pictured holding your baby at home, surrounded by joy, sleep deprivation, and the beautiful chaos of new parenthood. Instead, you’re walking into a hospital room, standing beside an incubator, and loving your baby from a place that feels very different than what you dreamed.

And still—you are showing up.

I hope today, more than anything, you feel seen and deeply appreciated. This may be one of the most memorable Father’s Days you will ever experience. No matter the reason your sweet baby is in the NICU, you are being asked of so much. Your baby needs you. Mama needs you. And you are holding so much of it together in ways that often go unnoticed.

From the very beginning, you were placed in an incredibly difficult position. Your baby arrives early or unexpectedly and suddenly everything splits—do you stay with your baby in the NICU or remain by mom’s side in recovery? And so you begin the back-and-forth: checking on your baby, updating mom, making sure she is healing, trying to ask the right questions, holding emotions for both of them, updating everyone and trying to be strong all at once.

It is a role no one feels fully prepared for.

But I want you to know this: the NICU nurses see you. They see the way you show up even in the chaos of juggling so much. The way you ask questions, learn monitors, remember details, and stand beside your baby even when you feel scared or overwhelmed. And we are proud of you. Truly!!

If this is your first Father’s Day, I hope you still find a way to feel it. Because even if your baby is in the NICU, that does not change the fact that they know you. They know your voice. They know your touch. They know your calm presence in a room full of machines and uncertainty. You are already their safe place.

And if you have other children at home, I hope you give yourself credit for everything you are balancing right now—work, home, hospital visits, emotional weight, and trying to keep life steady for everyone you love. Dads are often the quiet backbone during NICU journeys, holding things together while carrying their own fear and exhaustion.

So on this Father’s Day, my hope for you is simple.

I hope you take a breath.
I hope you allow yourself a moment of pride in how far you’ve come.
I hope you hold your baby and just be—no pressure, no expectations.
And I hope you give yourself permission to feel how strong you really are.

You are showing up in one of the hardest seasons of your life, and you are doing it with love.

Happy Father’s Day!

With love,

Your baby’s NICU nurse <3
