Patriotic Handprint + Footprint Crafts Kids Will Love (Free Printables!)

When thinking about the Fourth of July, we usually think about fireworks, cookouts, parades, festivals, and big gatherings. All super fun things! But they don’t always include many activities for babies. (This is especially true if you’re celebrating you baby’s first Fourth of July from the NICU.) So if you’re looking for a special way to make a memory for your baby this Fourth of July, consider making a hand print or footprint craft!

There’s something so special about looking back at your baby’s tiny hands and feet. They seem impossibly small in the moment, yet somehow they grow overnight. That’s why handprint and footprint crafts have become one of my favorite holiday traditions.

Whether you’re celebrating your baby’s very first Fourth of July or simply looking for a fun patriotic activity to do together, these keepsake crafts are an easy way to make memories you’ll treasure for years.

More Fourth of July Handprint & Footprint Craft Ideas

If you’re looking for even more patriotic inspiration, try one of these easy craft ideas!

1. Fireworks Handprint or Footprint

Paint your baby’s hand or foot in patriotic colors and stamp it onto white paper. Draw colorful fireworks, stars, and sparkles bursting all around the print for a festive holiday keepsake.

2. Rocket Ship Footprints

Turn your baby’s footprints into adorable red, white, and blue rockets! Simply add fins, windows, and colorful flames with markers or paint.

This is one of the cutest keepsakes for a baby’s first Fourth of July.

3. Patriotic Handprint & Footprint Wreath

Arrange alternating handprints and footprints in a circle to create a festive wreath. You can also put their prints in a heart, start, or any shape you desire!

Finish the center with either:

  • A large patriotic star
  • A red heart
  • “Happy Fourth of July”
  • Your baby’s name and the year
  • “Red, White, & Cute!”
4. Eagle Footprint Craft

Transform your baby’s footprint into a cute bald eagle by adding wings, eyes, a yellow beak, and patriotic decorations.

It’s an adorable way to celebrate America’s national bird.

5. American Flag Handprint

Use your child’s handprint as part of an American flag design.

Add painted stripes and stars around the handprint for a meaningful patriotic keepsake that’s easy enough for babies and toddlers.

6. Star Handprint Canvas

Stamp several red, white, and blue handprints around a large star in the center of a canvas or piece of cardstock.

Write the date underneath to create a keepsake you’ll enjoy displaying every summer.

7. Patriotic Footprint Banner

Create several painted footprints on cardstock, cut them out, and string them together to make a festive Fourth of July banner for your home or backyard barbecue.

8. Hot dog + Hamburger

One of my favorites! Turn your kiddos prints into the famous cookout meats that (most) everyone enjoys on the Fourth of July!

Tips for Making Handprint & Footprint Crafts

  • Use washable, non-toxic paint.
  • Keep baby wipes nearby for easy cleanup (or be ready for a bath right after)
  • Press gently to capture every tiny finger and toe.
  • Allow the paint to dry completely before framing.
  • Write your child’s name and the date on every keepsake.
  • Have a few pieces of paper ready incase you mess up the print on the first try or two
  • Try to complete the craft when your child is calm, happy and feeling cooperative. Otherwise you’ll be fighting them!
  • Have them be naked/only wearing a diaper when you do the craft! Although paint is washable, it is still frustrating when it gets on their clothes!
  • Go outside or sit on an old towel when doing the craft to avoid getting paint on your furniture/floors

You’ll be amazed how much those tiny hands and feet grow in just one year!
